Autumn ‘25

Learn about how collaboration leads to discovery in the Autumn edition of Illuminate.

From the director

For decades our team have been world leaders in immunology, making fundamental discoveries about how our body’s defence network protects us.

The influence of the immune system on health and medicine grows every year. But while we can now harness our natural defences to treat diseases like cancer, treatments for autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, which are caused by a misfiring immune system, remain limited.

The announcement of the Sir Gustav Nossal Professor of Immunology, detailed in our cover story, underscores the importance of continuing our work to better understand our complex immune system. This new perpetual role will lead pivotal research to advance immunology.

Sir Gus, our former director, researched how the immune system tells the difference between our own body and harmful invaders, helping us understand this critical process. We are enormously grateful to Sir Gus and the Nossal family for their generosity and vision in establishing this prestigious new position, continuing his research and leadership legacy.

Alongside the work underway at the Snow Centre for Immune Health, this role will ensure WEHI continues to lead in this critical area for human health. Importantly, through our continuing partnership with the Royal Melbourne Hospital, our scientists can turn lab-based findings into real world tests and treatments.

Like our immune system, WEHI will continue to learn and adapt, investing in leading technologies and the best minds in order to thrive.
