Bright Futures

Supporting future scientific leaders
Investing in tomorrow’s medical breakthroughs

Bright Futures is a crucial investment in medical research, supporting over 200 students at WEHI.

With over 70 labs, WEHI relies on students to help drive innovation. Bright Futures supports PhD, Masters and Honours students, empowering future scientific leaders that are essential to our research.

Students bring fresh perspectives to solve complex medical challenges, from pioneering cancer therapies to combatting neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s.

Yet today’s students face unprecedented financial pressures. These barriers risk pushing the best and brightest away from careers in research, threatening Australia’s future innovation and medical breakthroughs.

In response, WEHI has committed to increasing scholarship support for its students. However, we need your help to build a sustainable program that provides this critical support. Through the Bright Futures program, WEHI unites philanthropic supporters to create a powerful pooled fund that maximises every gift’s impact.

Your donation will support students with scholarships for Honours, Masters and PhD ‘top-ups’, PhD travel grants, and 8-week PhD extensions. Today’s medical research students are tomorrow’s scientific leaders, ready to make groundbreaking discoveries.

Your valued philanthropic contribution creates an environment where innovation thrives, leading to life-changing medical advancements for future generations.

Bright Futures is a crucial investment in medical research

Ease students’ financial stress to focus on medical research

PhD scholarships often fall below the minimum wage, contributing to a nearly 10% decline in Australian PhD enrolments over the past decade. Skyrocketing living costs also deter potential candidates, nearly 60% of whom are women.

Despite challenges, our students dedicate themselves to transformative work. But without further support, many may struggle to continue, with some leaving research altogether, or seeking opportunities overseas – a loss for both WEHI and Australia’s scientific strength.

Students are emerging scientific leaders with fresh perspectives

WEHI has a longstanding commitment to nurturing talented students because they drive discoveries through their unrelenting curiosity and innovative thinking.

For example, former PhD student David Vaux, discovered a protein that stops cancer cells from dying. This sparked a revolution in cancer research, leading to a new treatment that has saved millions of lives.

Investing in students lays the foundation for discoveries that will transform the future of healthcare.

Impact beyond a single research area – the power of collaboration

Your support impacts the entire medical science ecosystem at WEHI, and beyond.

Our scientists collaborate closely, sharing expertise, knowledge and new techniques.

This approach means new insights in one field often benefit others, advancing research in multiple disease areas. Our collaborative ethos accelerates students’ learning and discoveries.

By supporting Bright Futures, you’re empowering talented students and fostering the next generation of collaborative medical researchers.
